The Society Finch! I think it is one of the most under-rated finches that there is. The Society finch is the shining star of the Finch world. It is a peaceful and accommodating bird that is a pleasure to watch with its playful antics. It is a teacher bird - willing to try new foods and in turn teaching other more picky breeds how to eat them as well.
Societies are commonly used to foster Gouldians eggs/chicks when the Gouldian parents fail to do the job themselves. They are willing sit on eggs placed in their nest to incubate them, hatch them and raise the young. Some societies will even take already hatched chicks and raise them. While we prefer to have our Gouldians raise their own chicks whenever possible, Societies can be a life saver (literally) in emergency situations. In my eyes, this makes them invaluable to have.
When using Societies to foster, it is best to try and bring a "pair" into breeding condition the same as you would the Gouldians. Notice I stated "pair" - Societies will raise young whether it is a true Pair (male and female) or two of the same sex. Some breeders actually prefer to use two males more than any other pairing.
I highly recommend that you add a few pairs of society finches to your aviary if you are planning on breeding Lady Gouldian Finches. They will be a wonderful addition to your bird family. You will greatly enjoy there charming personality.
Breeding Society finches is also very rewarding. Society Finches come in a large variety to types. Examples are Pied's, Self's, crested, etc. They also have a large color range - a few (and most common) being Chocolate, Chestnut, Fawn.
